2016 WAITS-MAST - Pinot Noir
Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley
Situated at 1600 feet elevation, with a commanding south-east facing view of Anderson Valley, Rich Savoy’s vineyard off of Deer Meadows Road above Boonville is meticulously farmed in multiple blocks that are planted in a northwest orientation. In the 2016 vintage, we acquired five different clones of Pinot Noir, 115, 667, 777, Swan and Calera, to make six barrels. The 2016 vintage was a return to rain after the drought years, and it was overall a moderate vintage in terms of weather. The 2016 vintage of Deer Meadows is also our last vintage from this vineyard, given that the site was sold to Littorai in late 2016.
We are very proud of our final effort from this storied site. It combines different elements from our past vintages, from plush and powerful to structured and serious. The color is medium ruby, and the aromas open up to prominent red fruits and a touch of sandalwood, as well as subtle spice notes like clove, cumin and cinnamon. The palate is packed with pomegranate, alpine strawberry, cocoa powder and cedar. On the finish, the wine shows lively acidity, intense flavors and fine-grained tannins, giving it structure to balance heartier fare such as herb-roasted prime rib.
