Spring 2013 News

Spring is in full bloom in Northern California as the flowers are showing their colors, the temperature is getting warmer and budbreak is happening in the vineyard. As another vintage begins its cycle, we have one in barrel (2012), one just bottled (2011) and another in full release (2010). Waits-Mast Family Cellars is releasing the last two of our four 2010 Pinot Noirs, and as the weather gets warmer, we’re excited to release our first Rosé of Pinot Noir. We debuted the Rosé at Pinot Days Chicago in April and it was a hit at the show. Read on for all the details on our new wines and other updates on where you can try and buy Waits-Mast Pinot Noir.

SPRING 2013 RELEASES

2012 Rosé of Pinot Noir, Mendocino County: our first Rosé of Pinot Noir is a saignée (bleed) of the fruit from three vineyards in Mendocino County: Deer Meadows and Nash Mill vineyards in Anderson Valley and Mariah vineyard in the Mendocino Ridge appellation. The color of this wine is a pretty, pale salmon and its bouquet imparts bright floral, strawberry and briny mineral notes. The palate is fresh and light, with soft raspberry and strawberry notes. We only made one barrel – that’s 24 cases – so get yours before its gone. Read more and purchase here.

2010 Pinot Noir, Archer Family Vineyard, Russian River Valley: The 2010 Pinot Noir from Archer Family Vineyard is our first wine from this Russian River vineyard situated very close to Amber Ridge vineyard. The Archer Family has a pleasant tartness from a cool-vintage acidity, with dried crushed raspberries on the nose, with a smoky note from the Taransaud French oak barrel. On the palate is sour cherry and savory rhubarb with some warm spice notes. 50 cases produced. Read more and purchase here.

2010 Pinot Noir, Oppenlander Vineyard, Mendocino County: Oppenlander Vineyard, situated closer to the coast, NW of Anderson Valley, sees consistently cool temperatures across the growing season and is harvested later than other regions. This cooler temperature range and coastal proximity can deliver a certain “oceanic acidity,” lending structure and complexity to the wine. The 2010, our second vintage with Oppenlander, shows clear red-fruit high tones, with hints of earth and mushroom on the nose and a lush and fruity palate. 50 cases produced. Read more and purchase here.

SPRING 2017 RELEASES & NEWS

SPRING RELEASE: NEW SURPRISES IN BLOOM

Spring is here! Spring has definitely sprung in Northern California. Cherry blossoms and tulips are blooming everywhere. We hope the warmer weather and fresh aromas of the season reach you soon as well. There's always an excitement to Spring - new surprises abound, including our latest offerings. Read below for the reveal of our "surprise blanc" and a just-published Wine & Spirits magazine review for a new wine!

2016 "SURPRISE BLANC" REVEALED

2016 Waits-Mast Sauvignon Blanc, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge: Yes, you read that correctly: Sauvignon Blanc! We've been thinking about making a white wine for some time now and last September, we gained access to this fruit at the last minute - hence the "surprise." We were in Anderson Valley at the end of Winesong weekend and got a call from the grower that one ton of his Sauvignon Blanc became available and needed to be delivered to the winery in San Francisco that day. It's been code-named "surprise blanc" ever since. We're very pleased with our first effort making a white wine. The small lot yielded just 44 cases. This Sauvignon Blanc is from Mariah Vineyard in Mendocino Ridge, the 2400' vineyard from which we source Pinot Noir. Grower Dan Dooling only has a few rows, so the varietal in this appellation is rare. Just bottled in February, this wine is already showing fresh lemon, lime and melon fruit flavors with hints of earth, chamomile and minerality. $27/bottle (wine club price: $22.95/bottle) >>PURCHASE

NEW 2014 DEER MEADOWS IN WINE & SPIRITS "YEAR'S BEST"

2014 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley: We're excited to release our newest expression of Pinot Noir from Deer Meadows Vineyard in Anderson Valley. We're also honored that it is featured in the April 2017 "Year's Best Pinot Noir" issue of Wine & Spirits magazine, with a rating of 91 points. Here are the tasting notes from Wine & Spirits writer Luke Sykora: “Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits first sourced fruit from this hillside vineyard in 2009; planted at 1,600 feet of elevation on a southeast-facing slope above Boonville, it often makes their most energetic pinot noir. This feels like a hillside wine, with a firm, sandstone grip that brings to mind Sonoma Coast wines from further south. It’s a bit chewy, but clean and high toned, with a hint of warmth from alcohol spicing up its aromas of orange zest and rose petals. Give it a few years in the cellar to allow its tannins to integrate.” Only 140 cases were produced. $58/bottle (wine club price: $49.30/bottle). >>PURCHASE

WAITS-MAST TAKES DOUBLE-GOLD, GOLD MEDALS

The 10th Annual American Fine Wine Invitational is held every April, and we're proud to announce that three Waits-Mast Pinot Noir wines have been awarded high-profile medals in the competition:

  • Double-Gold, Pinot Noir: 2013 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge
  • Gold, Pinot Noir: 2013 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Wentzel Vineyard, Anderson Valley
  • Gold,  Pinot Noir: 2013 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Oppenlander Vineyard, Mendocino County

The invitation-only competition is judged by Christopher Sawyer, Randy Caporoso, Chip Cassidy, Ellen Landis and other leading sommeliers and wine experts.

These 2013 Waits-Mast wines are starting to get scooped up by restaurants and distributors. To purchase before they sell out, go to our webstore. >>PURCHASE

Some of our favorite tasting events are coming up in the next couple of months:

This year we are also co-hosting a winemaker dinner at Scharffenberger Cellars with Harmonique and Domaine Anderson. There are a couple of seats left for dinner. Buy tickets for all of the events at the festival website.

Mill Valley Wine, Beer & Gourmet Food Tasting, June 4: This is our first time pouring at this event at the Downtown Plaza in Mill Valley. The event runs from 1-4pm - please join us! Tickets are available here

Taste of Mendocino, June 10, San Francisco: Mendocino comes to San Francisco in this annual event celebrating the food and wine of Mendocino County. Word on the street is that Saucy Ukiah will be onsite to make their wood-fired pizzas. We'll be there pouring our new 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from Mendocino Ridge and (soon-to-be-released) 2016 Rosé of Pinot Noir. Buy tickets and join us to kick off summer in style!

Winter 2016 News

Winter greetings from Waits-Mast Family Cellars. We're barely into the new year and we're already super-busy. Brian just returned from a great trip to New York City in January, we are days away from bottling our 2015 Rosé of Pinot Noir and Spring tasting events are just around the corner.

Brian's trip to New York was quite the adventure as fearless, committed Pinot Noir fans trudged their way through "Snowmaggedon 2016" - New York City's second biggest snowstorm on record - to attend Pinot Days New York on January 23. And the winemaker dinner at Charlie Palmer at the Knick the night before was memorable for the amazing food and wine pairings (Pinot + scallops, truffles, pork belly, duck...need we say more?). The trip was also productive, as Brian visited a number of high-end restaurants and retailers with our New York distribution partner Wine Source USA. We continue to grow our presence in the area, with recent placements at the Dutch, Park Hyatt, American Cut, Tamarind Tribeca and more to come.

WINTER SPECIALS

It's a bit of an odd winter in terms of weather. We had lots of rain in California throughout December and January, making our growers very happy (filling up their ponds). Things are starting to dry out a bit and even warm up, which also seems to be a recurring theme in other parts of the country. Regardless of the weather, to keep things interesting for you in the month of February we have a special for our mailing list members:

  • 10% off 2011 Londer six-packs. We're extending our case discount (10%) on six or more bottles of our 2011 Pinot Noir, Londer Vineyard. Why? It is drinking so well right now and we want to make sure you take advantage of it while it is still in stock. There are a couple of restaurants that continue to gobble this up by the glass, so we figured why should they get all the special treatment? >>PURCHASE NOW

OTHER BITS AND BOBS

Here are some other updates from our home office in San Francisco:

  • Our 2014 Pinot Noir Blanc was practically sold out before it was released. Alas, we knew ye well. Stay tuned for future updates on the white wine front...
  • Our 2012 Pinot Noir, Nash Mill Vineyard, Anderson Valley is sold out. Fear not, our 2013 vintage from this vineyard is available and drinking great. Our other 2012s are now in diminishing quantities, so grab them while you can.
  • We're bottling our 2015 Rosé of Pinot Noir next week. Once it settles in bottle for a few weeks, we'll update you on when it will be available to our list. We expect to bottle only about 30 cases.
  • We're looking forward to some of our favorite events in the Spring: Pinot Days Chicago on April 15 and the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival on May 20-22. Look for an upcoming email for event and ticket info. We hope to see you there!

WINTER 2015 NEWS

WINE ENTHUSIAST TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2015

We're excited to announce to that our 2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir from Deer Meadows Vineyard was ranked #34 in Wine Enthusiast Magazine's new Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2015. The magazine culls from a long list of wines across countries, regions, varietals and producers the best age-worthy wines reviewed this year. These are wines of structure and finesse, destined to gain complexity over time. We're proud to be one of just a handful of domestic Pinot Noir producers included and one of two Anderson Valley wines represented.

We can tell you from experience that our now sold-out 2009 Deer Meadows Pinot Noir developed even more nuanced and exotic aromatics and flavors over time. Read the review of our 2012 wine from Wine Enthusiast's December 2015 issue:

95 Points. Waits-Mast 2012 Deer Meadows Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley): This full-bodied wine has a treasure trove of flavor complexity and great balance. The color is a deep red with an auburn rim. Aromas present a fascinating medley of cherry, black tea, rhubarb and pine forest, while the flavors weave together ripe Bing cherry, crisp raspberry and subtle Asian spices. It’s delicious, and best to drink after 2017.

We now have less than 40 cases left of this wine and it is on allocation, so if you want some for your cellar, we recommend you acquire some now.

ADDITIONAL 90+ RATINGS IN WINE ENTHUSIAST

In the November issue of Wine Enthusiast, all five of our 2012 Pinot Noir wines were reviewed and received ratings of 91 points or higher. Below is a full listing of the wines, ratings and tasting notes from that issue:

94 Points, Cellar Selection. Waits-Mast 2012 Mariah Vineyard Pinot Noir (Mendocino Ridge): A deep color and an aroma of extreme freshness are the first things to notice, then intense flavors of tart cherry and rhubarb kick in on the palate. This wine is light to medium bodied, and the texture is lively, with lip-smacking acidity and tannin. Best after 2017.

94 Points, Cellar Selection. Waits-Mast 2012 Oppenlander Vineyard Pinot Noir (Mendocino County): Great balance, snappy acidity and concentrated fruit flavors make this grand wine especially appealing. The aromas of blackberry and red cherry are vibrant, the juicy, mouthwatering cherry flavors are dazzling and the finish lingers. It is balanced for good aging, so drink it from 2017–2020.

93 Points, Editor's Choice. Waits-Mast 2012 Nash Mill Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley): A distinctive personality shines through in the almost floral and lightly spicy aromas, the vivid and generous cherry-tart flavors and the ever-so-supple texture of this full-bodied wine. While it has firm acidity and tannins, this is a posh, luxurious beverage in which to indulge.

91 Points. Waits-Mast 2012 Wentzel Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley): Subtle, spicy oak influences mingle beautifully with tasty Bing cherry and persimmon flavors in this medium to full bodied wine that has a silky texture, crisp balance and fine-grained tannins. Good balance and interesting complexity propel it more than fruit intensity.

These wines are also becoming limited in quantity as restaurants in the Bay Area, Southern California and New York are snatching them up. To get yours before they sell out, visit our webstore.

SPRING 2015 NEWS

SPRING NEWS AND REVIEWS

Spring is here, and it has been feeling that way for a number of weeks in Northern California. We've had a relatively warm and very dry winter, which means things are sprouting early (and earlier than last year). In mid-March, we were in Chicago, where we poured at our eighth Pinot Days Chicago, to a very busy crowd. And two weeks before that we were in Santa Barbara for World of Pinot Noir. It's also been a busy time for Waits-Mast in the press, so we're excited to have some great reviews to share with you and all of the beautiful prose that comes with them. There are also upcoming events and new restaurant placements, so read on, take a walk in the forest and enjoy all that spring has to offer.

RECENT REVIEWS

Wine & Spirits: Year's Best Pinot Noir. Every April, Wine & Spirits Magazine culls from its reviews across the year and ranks its top Pinot Noir wines from North America. Out of 1,300+ Pinot Noirs reviewed, only 175 or so make the final cut and our 2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley was included in this ranking with a rating of 92 points. Here are the accompanying tasting notes from the review:

"Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits pull this wine from a vineyard planted at 1,600 feet, far into the hills of the Anderson Valley. It’s silky and clean, a burst of red fruit that opens into wisps of wood smoke and leafy undergrowth scents. Vinous and firm, it’s already showing well, and feels poised to develop in interesting directions with four or five years of age."

We made 97 cases of this wine (which also was included in the San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 Wines last year) and have about half of this production remaining. Click here to see your allocation and purchase today.

PinotFile: Review of Waits-Mast 2012 Vintage. Rusty Gaffney, MD, aka The Prince of Pinot, has reviewed many of our Pinot Noir wines over the years and is a regular attendee and speaker at the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival, World of Pinot Noir and more. He recently reviewed our lineup of 2012 Pinot Noir; here are some highlights from his blog, PinotFile:

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Nash Mill Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Like a walk in the forest, this wine smells of conifer and earthy spices. An intriguing palate featuring flavors of black cherry, baking spice, and mocha. Tricked out with a velvety mouthfeel and firm structural bones. Highly unique and interesting, and difficult to describe, but I really like it. Even better later the same day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Serious goodness. Score: 93"

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Shy, but pleasing aromas of darker stone and berry fruits. Impressive attack of nicely ripened boysenberry and pomegranate fruit backed by firm tannins. The finish is especially noteworthy with plenty of spice and fruit to please. Should benefit from another year or two in bottle. Score: 92"

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge: "Interesting aromas of cherry, sous-bois, iron and a hint of smoky oak. Light in weight with good finesse, offering flavors of cherry, boysenberry and spice. Score: 89"

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Wentzel Vineyard, Anderson Valley: "Shy aromas of cherry and raspberry replicated in the flavors. Laden with blueberry, raspberry and spice, framed by good acid tension...Cellar this one for a year or two. Score: 88-89"

2012 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Oppenlander Vineyard, Mendocino County: "Highly enjoyable with a touch of oak seasoning and a subtle earthy, feral note typical of this vineyard. Nicely balanced tannins and some finishing intensity. Great potential here but will require some patience. Score: 90-91"

To purchase any of these wines, join our mailing list and visit our webstore.

2010 VINTAGE RELEASES
I
n June we released our 2010 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir from Londer Vineyard in Anderson Valley. Sourced from Londer Estate vineyards, this fresh and elegant Pinot Noir is currently showing bright Anderson Valley red fruit high tones, with dark fruit edges and hints of earth and tea leaves on the nose. In recent tastings, our Londer has been described as having a "Burgundian nose" and "great spice on the mid-palate." It is exciting to open this bottle every couple of months and see how it is gaining complexity as it ages.

We are also offering our 2010 Wentzel Vineyard Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley as a special pre-release. The Wentzel is showing dark and red fruits with a purity of Pinot fruit, a touch of mushroom on the nose, some grip from the tannins and tremendous structure. We poured it at Winesong in Little River, CA, in September and the crowds were raving about it. Some of our favorite quotes about the 2010 Wentzel from tasters at Winesong included: "a real knockout," "this one has it all," and "the star of the show." We recommend buying a few bottles and laying them down until spring. This is our second vintage from this vineyard, the first being the 2007, which was included in the San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 Wines of 2009.

We still have a few cases left of our other 2009 wines, including the 2009 Oppenlander from Mendocino County, which received a "Pinot Geek" rating from PinotFile over the summer, the 2009 La Encantada from Sta. Rita Hills and the 2009 Amber Ridge from Russian River Valley.

WHERE TO TRY & BUY

Our wines have recently been added to some very well-curated wine lists at restaurants in Northern California and Chicago. In Northern California, you can now find our wines at Brasserie S&P in San Francisco, Cin Cin in Los Gatos and MacCallum House in Mendocino. In Chicago, L20 and Acadia have just added our 2009 Waits-Mast Pinot Noir, Amber Ridge Vineyard from Russian River Valley to their lists. Check out the News section of our website for availability at other retail shops and restaurants.
